Most boot organisers end up sliding into a corner within a week. The fix is rarely a different organiser — it is how it is sized, anchored and loaded.

Size it to the flat floor

Measure the flat area of the boot, not the widest point. An organiser that rests partly on a wheel arch rocks on every corner and eventually tips.

Anchor it

Use the boot floor hooks with the straps if the organiser has them, or place it against the seat back so it has one fixed side. An unanchored box in an empty boot is a projectile in a hard stop.

Load in the right order

• Bottom: tools, jump leads, anything heavy and rarely used.
• Middle: the weekly things — cloths, wipes, a folded bag.
• Top and side pockets: what you reach for at a fuel stop.

Keep the cooler compartment for cold, not for cans of oil

The insulated section on a boot organiser is thin. It holds temperature for a couple of hours in city traffic and no longer; do not treat it as a fridge on a long drive.

Folding it away

Fabric organisers fold flat. Fold along the sewn creases rather than inventing new ones — that is what keeps the base board from delaminating.
